Located in downtown Columbia, SC, the Hampton-Preston Mansion is celebrating it's 200th anniversary in 2018 making the beautiful historic home one of the oldest remaining structures in Columbia South Carolina. Owned by Richland County and managed by The Historic Columbia Foundation, the mansion celebrated it's anniversary by undergoing a holistic rehabilitation that included new exhibits, a new exterior paint job, expanded gardens that continue to be remodeled, and the addition of some hands-on interactive exhibits as well. The new face lift alone is a stark contrast to the cold gray exterior that greeted visitors to the grounds for many years.
Originally built in 1818 by a wealthy Columbia, SC merchant, Ainsley Hall and his wife Sara, they only lived in the mansion until 1823 when they sold the home to Wade Hampton. The Hampton-Preston Mansion would become one of Columbia's most grand residences.
In the years following the Civil War, the Hampton-Preston Mansion would be called home by a convent, a Governor, Chicora Women's College, and was a headquarters for a Union general in 1865. After undergoing a rehabilitation, The Mansion's new life as a historic house museum began in 1970.
