52 Saturdays - Week 23 - Finlay Park in Columbia, SC

Finlay Park in Columbia, SC  Perhaps the best known and most iconic pictures that one can find of Columbia, SC these days are that of the fountain in Finlay Park. Well, it's currently shut off for repairs so I didn't take any. The truth is that the rest of the park still has a lot to offer though.

Originally dedicated in 1859 as Sidney Park, the 14 green space was mostly neglected following the Civil War. However, in 1992 the park received new life and was rededicated as Finlay Park, named after Kirkman Finlay a former Columbia, SC mayor who had a large part in revitalizing the Vista area of downtown.

Finlay Park in Columbia, SC Now blanketed with lush, green grass, Finlay Park which sits in the heart of downtown Columbia offers visitors a break from the asphalt and concrete that surround the area. There is a playground for the little ones and mature trees line the edges of the park allowing an escape from the Summer Sun.  There is a walking path around the park as well as a water feature on one side near the fountain which will hopefully be up and running again soon.

A small amphitheater on the far end of the park also plays host to concerts throughout the Summer and on special occasions. There is also a family friendly movie night series at Finlay throughout the Summer as well. So if you are looking for something to do in Downtown Columbia, SC then taking a look at Finlay Park may be just the thing for you and yours.

Finlay Park is located at 930 Laurel Street Columbia, SC 29201 and is free to enter.

This is an ambitious project you took on, and a really good way to showcase your local parks.
