JL's Columbia SC Real Estate Blog: Dressed for success

Dressed for success

I often wonder this days if I have become what most people call old fashioned. I see great deal of Realtors in my area, who for lack of a better way to put it, look like bums. They don't seem to care about their outward appearance, as they regularly meet with clients in blue jeans. Maybe times are a little more relaxed these days, but we do need to at least appear professional in my opinion. I've never met with anyone on business terms when I wasn't in a suit and tie. I don't even stop into my office without being well dressed, just in case the situation calls for it.

Again, maybe I'm old fashioned, but every person I meet with to open a door or do a listing appointment, is a job interview. And me personally, I want the job. So, if it takes wearing a suit and tie, well I've already gotten used to that.

In todays society, the acceptible dress code has gotten quite lax. I know that I wear jeans 95% of the time when I am meeting with clients and the other 5% of the time I would have on shorts. It was about 7 years ago that I first noticed on how lax people had gotten in their daily dress. For years I had not been to church and when I started dating my second wife, I started going to church with her and her kids. She was catholic and I was shocked at how casual most of the church people were. People change over time.

I agree with you JL, People should dress nice and care about their appearance.. it says alot for them.  Yes times have changed and people do dress more casually but in business it says alot about you if you still dress nice, no matter what anyone says.  We have "jean day" at work and I dont ever participate because I dont think that the workplace is the place for jeans.

My first meeting with my clients I am in business casual, not to stiff of a suit and not so relaxed that it looks like I just came from the pool.  Based on their age and how they dress I try and go just one step up.  I don't want them to feel uncomfortable that I am to formal and want them to look at me as a professional.  Home inspections are always jeans though so I can crawl around with them and look at anything the inspector points out.

JL- I agree with you. It is important to keep a professional edge. I do admit, I lost the tie and cost a few years back, but it is a rare day to ever see me in the office with anything other than dress pants and shirt. Occasionally, if I am showing on a snowy or icy day on the weekend, and I know the client well, I will wear jeans to stay warm. But other than that, I believe the way you dress is a reflection of how you handle your life and business!

Marketing experts say people make up their minds about you in the first 5 seconds of interaction.  A huge chunk of that must be about how you're dressed.  I agree we must dress like professionals if we want to be seen as professionals.

I agree with you Cindy,  one should dress one step above the client..  3 steps above would be over doing it.  Over dressing would not only make you uncomfortable but also your client.

JL; Wear a tie to the office! You can lighten up and dress business casual. I do wear a tie when first meeting a client. But Hey. We are all different. There is no one correct way to act.

Maybe I should tell the story of having to almost carry a listing agent up a hill at a property because he was dressed inappropriately in a suit, tie and dress shoes.  I was in jeans and hiking boots.  My buyer was in flip-flops and shorts.  This was for a $2m home.

Appropriate dress isn't always a suit and tie...

It depends on what you are selling and to whom.  If your clients are dressed in jeans, you should be dressed in jeans.  If you are going to homes that have dirt and mud, don't wear your fancy shoes.  I have probably lost some business because of my appearance but I have had buyers tell me that I gained their business because I wasn't wearing a suit and tie.

Hey Mike.. So, this isn't really about a gift I rieceved, but a gift for my brother that I actually witnessed him open.. This was about 7 years ago My middle brother had just opened his big gift and it was an authentic Team Canada hockey jersey.. he was stoked and so was my younger brother.. they were oohing and ahhing over, checking out all the details.. so then my youngest brother goes to open his gift it wasn't his big one, but still, he was pretty stoked, I think he rips back the paper and it's a juggling set with a how-to book hahahahah!! The look on his face just fell to the floor He had rieceved his big gift earlier in the fall (new camping and outdoor gear and he needed for his high school back packing trip).. I think he was expecting a little but more to his taste for his smaller gift than a juggling set anyway, he didn't really want to say anything to my mom, but then my other brother broke the ice by teasing my mom about getting juggling balls for his gift.. we were all dying laughing by the end of the night.. when my brothers get going they're kind of a 2-man comedy show.. Anyway, my mom still gets razzed about that gift to this day.. She took it all in good stride and shakes her head, wondering why she ever got my totally uncoordinated brother a juggling set..
